The Space Force has selected 247 Air Force Reservists in space-related specialties to transfer into part-time roles this summer, a step officials say advances the rollout of the service’s new personnel system.
The move is an early milestone in implementing the Space Force Personnel Management Act, which is designed to merge currently serving Guardians and Air Force Reservists working in space-focused fields into a single force that offers both full- and part-time career tracks.
“The integration of these talented Air Force Reservists is an important step in the evolution of our service,” said Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman. “They bring a wealth of experience and expertise to our force, and we’re excited to welcome them as Guardians.”
Part-time Guardians will be designated Guardians on Non-Sustained Duty, or GNSD, and embedded across the service’s day-to-day institutional and warfighting-enabling missions. To receive a “good year” toward retirement, GNSDs will be required to complete the equivalent of 36 days annually, comprising 48 inactive-duty training periods and 12 annual training days.
Reservists who were selected can decline the part-time transfer up until they receive official orders. The Space Force said the list of names is posted on its Space Force Transfer page.
Congress last year granted the Space Force new authorities to build a single-component personnel model, an approach touted by Pentagon leaders as a way to retain specialized space talent while providing more flexible service options. Additional transfer cohorts are expected as the personnel system is phased in.
