The U.S. Army has issued an updated blueprint for its communications and data infrastructure, unveiling Army Unified Network Plan 2.0 as it pivots from consolidating systems to fielding and continually upgrading them for operations across multiple domains.
Building on the 2021 plan’s emphasis on convergence of tactical and enterprise networks, the new document concentrates on the next phases: to “operationalize the Unified Network” in 2024–2026 and to “continuously modernize and transform the Unified Network” from 2027 onward. Army leaders say the revision reflects a more contested information environment and the need to make data the core of how units connect, share, and act alongside joint and allied partners.
AUNP 2.0 outlines five major efforts to advance the Army’s contribution to the Department of Defense Information Network, including completing the unified backbone; preparing formations, capabilities, and processes for multidomain operations; hardening the architecture around zero-trust security; reshaping investments, policy, and governance; and instituting a cycle of ongoing improvement.
“AUNP 2.0 is new guidance on how the warfighter actually approaches, accelerates and operationalizes the Unified Network across the board,” said Lt. Gen. Jeth Rey, the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff, G-6. “It’s going to enable multidomain operations and chart the roadmap of where we’re going for the Unified Network by 2027. It also talks about the critical enablers required to achieve a multidomain operational Army by 2030.”
According to the plan, the Army aims to simplify technology at the tactical edge, allow units to connect seamlessly from any location, and extend common data standards and systems across theaters and domains to bolster security, agility, and interoperability. The approach is intended to speed secure data-sharing with allies and partners while staying ahead of adversaries.
The document also reiterates the original plan’s goal to “reduce complexity and increase integration” across the force, now framed against an environment where global events and emerging technologies are reshaping how information is contested.
“As warfare continues to evolve across multiple domains and our adversaries challenge our historical dominance, the Army’s dedication to integrating and modernizing its network infrastructure is crucial.” the AUNP 2.0’s conclusion states. “The Unified Network is essential to the future force’s success, enabling seamless and effective operations across air, land, sea, space, and cyberspace…. The AUNP 2.0 sets a direction for technological superiority and operational readiness for an uncertain future.”
The Army said the full plan is publicly available online.
