The Combined Space Operations Initiative Principals’ Board met on April 17, 2026, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, bringing together senior representatives from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States to address rapidly evolving security dynamics in the space domain.
Participants assessed that the space environment has grown more complex and less secure. While space systems underpin economies and societies, they said space is increasingly contested by actors developing offensive capabilities that put shared interests at risk.
In light of the changing global security environment, the principals agreed to review their approach to keep the initiative fit for purpose. Members will further prioritize and align activities to protect and defend the freedom of access to and use of outer space.
The initiative plans to intensify delivery of capabilities for combined operations, with a particular focus on Multi-National Force Operation OLYMPIC DEFENDER. Established in 2013 to synchronize efforts to strengthen resilience and deterrence against malicious acts in space, the operation recently demonstrated the collective ability of allied nations to detect events in space, including threats to space systems. By aligning these multinational efforts, the initiative seeks to enhance collective security and operational readiness to respond to hostile space activities.
Senior officials are scheduled to reconvene in December 2026 in Oslo, Norway, to review progress on strategic objectives and ensure continued responsiveness to the shifting security landscape.
