DARPA has named the top performers in its Bio-Attribution Challenge, concluding a months-long competition aimed at advancing tools to determine whether a biological threat arises from nature, accident, or deliberate engineering. Announced July 1, the final awards bring total prize money to $180,000 and cap a virtual event in which eight Round 2 teams completed the conclusive “Determination – Attribution” phase.
DARPA designed the final round to push computational limits: competitors had 24 hours to process 600–800 terabytes of data and were judged on their ability to detect indicators of a potential pathogen release or manipulation. Success required integrating deep sequence screening with geospatial and temporal metadata, with teams given very little prior information to mirror real-world uncertainty.
“The ability to rapidly and accurately identify, characterize, and determine the source of a biological sequence, whether natural or engineered, within an enormously complex environmental sample background is a critical national security capability and U.S. government priority,” said Cmdr. Cody Thornton, deputy program manager for the Bio-Attribution Challenge. “We called on creative researchers to help us catalyze a new generation of tools, and these top performers have successfully demonstrated methodologies that provide orders of magnitude improvements over current tools.”
To ensure realism without biosecurity risk, the challenge was fully computational. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory curated all datasets to simulate complex attribution scenarios, enabling high-fidelity testing without using actual pathogens or exposing sensitive information.
Following the announcement of Round 1 winners in May, DARPA distributed the remaining $90,000 of the prize pool to Round 2 winners and issued several non-monetary commendations for speed, precision, and software efficiency. Recognitions include:

DARPA said the top performers delivered significant gains over current approaches, highlighting rapid, precise bio-attribution as a growing priority for national security.
