Raytheon wins $1.8 billion SPY-6 radar production and sustainment contract

Raytheon has received a $1.8 billion contract extension to provide SPY-6 radars to the U.S. Navy, expanding on a hardware production and sustainment award made in March 2022. The agreement includes options that could raise the cumulative value to $3.3 billion.

“This contract extension reflects the Navy’s confidence in our ability to deliver advanced, reliable and scalable radar solutions,” said Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon. “Our continued investment and commitment to ramping production will ensure the fleet has the sensing advantage to stay ahead of evolving threats for decades to come.”

The company said SPY-6 is currently operating on two commissioned Navy ships and installed on 11 others in various stages of testing. Over the next decade, the radars are expected to be deployed on more than 50 Navy ships.

Raytheon described the SPY-6 family as built on more than a decade of design, testing and manufacturing and said its performance has been validated at sea.

The company said it has invested more than $800 million to modernize radar manufacturing facilities and expand capacity, positioning it to double SPY-6 output by 2028. According to Raytheon, those upgrades are intended to support long-term availability and reduce costs for the Navy.

To support the program, Raytheon said it is significantly expanding its engineering workforce in Andover, with roles for early-career and experienced hires as well as veterans, and is listing openings on its careers website.
