The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to the Netherlands of 530 AGM-114R2 Hellfire missiles and related support, an estimated package worth $200 million.
According to the notification to Congress, the deal would include U.S. Army technical assistance, integration support, publications, and other elements of logistics and program support. Lockheed Martin, based in Orlando, Florida, is the principal contractor.
Washington said the proposed sale would bolster a key NATO ally, aiding Dutch efforts to modernize its armed forces, strengthen homeland defense, deter regional threats, and enhance interoperability with the United States and other allies. The State Department added that the transaction would not alter the basic military balance in the region and that the Netherlands is expected to absorb the equipment without difficulty.
The AGM-114R2 is a laser-guided, multi-purpose variant of the Hellfire used across helicopters, unmanned aircraft, and other platforms. The Netherlands operates AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and MQ-9 Reaper drones, both of which are compatible with the missile.
The approval does not constitute a finalized contract. Congress can review and potentially block the sale, and the final value and quantity could change during negotiations.
