Air Force Global Strike Command said the MH-139 Grey Wolf has achieved Initial Operational Capability as of Aug. 10, marking a major step in modernizing nuclear security operations and beginning the transition away from the Vietnam-era UH-1N Huey.
The Grey Wolf introduces significant performance gains over the legacy platform: it is nearly 50 percent faster, can carry twice as many troops, and features enhanced defensive systems. Those upgrades are intended to speed the mobilization of security forces and shorten response times across the missile fields.
“For more than half a century, the UH-1N Huey has been a key element of our Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) security, and we owe a debt of gratitude to the crews who flew and maintained it over all these years,” said Gen. S.L. Davis, commander of Air Force Global Strike Command. “Securing these missiles demands our best efforts and the MH-139 will significantly improve our capabilities.”
The aircraft is tailored for the 20th Air Force’s expansive mission, which spans roughly 33,600 square miles of prairies, plains, and mountain ranges. Its speed, range, and survivability are designed to support 24/7 missile field security across austere terrain.
The Grey Wolf’s capabilities are also aligned with the command’s broader modernization plans to replace the Minuteman III ICBM with the next-generation LGM-35A Sentinel weapon system. Its speed, range, and modern command-and-control systems are intended to secure assets during the phased transition, helping maintain uninterrupted operations as new Sentinel sites come online and Minuteman III facilities are decommissioned.
Reaching IOC followed extensive testing, conversion training, and operational milestones led by the 582nd Helicopter Group. In January 2026, the 40th Helicopter Squadron conducted the first operational Minuteman III convoy with the MH-139, escorting maintenance and armored security vehicles more than 100 miles over six hours without refueling. Earlier, in January 2025, the 550th Helicopter Squadron completed the aircraft’s first Initial Operational Test and Evaluation flight.
“It has been a distinct privilege to watch the iconic Huey faithfully support our global operations throughout my entire career,” said Col. Bryant Bevan, 582nd HG commander. “However, this transition represents a critical leap forward. The advanced capabilities of the MH-139A Grey Wolf will directly empower our airborne forces with the enhanced speed, range, and survivability required to decisively defend and secure the Minuteman III weapons system.”
Beyond convoy support and around-the-clock emergency response, the command plans to employ the Grey Wolf for search and rescue, disaster response, and medical evacuations.
