Air Force chief of staff visits Maxwell, addresses Officer Training School graduation

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach visited Maxwell Air Force Base on June 18 to address Officer Training School Class 26-12, welcoming more than 170 newly commissioned officers and emphasizing readiness, character, and a strong warrior culture.

Speaking before the graduates and more than 1,000 family members and friends, Wilsbach underscored the responsibility that comes with leading Airmen and the importance of competence, judgment, discipline, and moral courage.

“Your Airmen do not expect perfection, but they do expect authenticity,” Wilsbach said. “They expect you to lead from the front, to hold yourself accountable, and to care enough to enforce standards even when it would be easier not to.

“The standards you experienced here were not arbitrary. They exist because combat is unforgiving.”

Throughout his remarks, Wilsbach urged the new officers to think clearly under pressure, make sound decisions amid uncertainty, build trust through consistency, and lean on the experience of noncommissioned officers. He also emphasized moral and mental toughness as essential to fostering a warrior culture rooted in technical excellence, accountability, and pride in the profession.

“Toughness means doing the right thing when it costs something,” Wilsbach told the graduating class. “It means maintaining standards when nobody is watching. It means accepting responsibility when things go wrong. It means taking care of your people while never losing focus on the mission.”

As the graduates depart Maxwell for duty stations across the globe, Wilsbach’s core message centered on people and preparedness, reinforcing that the Air Force’s strength—and the credibility of national deterrence—rests on the readiness of its Airmen.
