Air Force names 14 to scientific advisory board

The Department of the Air Force has named 14 new members to its Scientific Advisory Board, a federally chartered panel that provides independent scientific and technical advice to senior Air Force and Space Force leaders. The board’s work informs decisions by the secretary of the Air Force, the chief of staff of the Air Force and the chief of Space Operations on complex technology and operational challenges across the air and space domains.

According to the department, the new cohort brings expertise spanning industry and academia and is expected to help accelerate the evaluation and transition of emerging technologies into operational capabilities.

The newly appointed members are:

– Dr. James D. Moreland, Jr.
– Dr. Kevin J. Saeger
– Dr. Nils R. Sandell, Jr.
– Dr. Patrick A. Stadter (Vice Chair)
– Dr. Grant H. Stokes

The board advises on priorities such as maturing advanced sensors, autonomy and AI-enabled decision support, resilient communications, and space operations, with the aim of speeding the development and fielding of new capabilities. Its recommendations are used to strengthen readiness and sustain a technical edge for Airmen and Guardians.
