Department of War partners with Genesis Mission to advance scientific AI

The Department of War is expanding its role in the White House-led Genesis Mission, a national effort to use artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery, with plans to commit over $200 million in Fiscal Year 2026 and more than $1.3 billion in FY 2027 to advance critical National Science & Technology Challenges.

To accelerate progress, the department plans to leverage the Department of Energy’s American Science and Security Platform, which connects data, compute, scientific instrumentation and AI tools to drive discovery and technological innovation. It is contributing decades of validated aeronautic, hydrodynamic, acoustic and sensor data to the platform via DOE’s Discovery Engine, an integration intended to enable automated design loops, decision superiority and scaled breakthroughs in national security research.

A central element of the financial commitment is the Digital Biosecurity Forge (DB-FORGE), a high-performance computing environment developed with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Funding for DB-FORGE begins at $30 million in FY 2026 and is projected to grow to $150 million in FY 2027. Beyond this flagship project, the department is aligning funding across its broader research and development portfolio—including biomanufacturing, human health and biosecurity policy—to ensure its contributions are robust, well-resourced and integrated with the Genesis Mission’s AI-for-science capabilities.

“President Trump has mandated that the United States be the dominant global leader in AI, and the Genesis Mission represents an unprecedented opportunity to unlock our nation’s scientific might,” said Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering Emil Michael. “The Department of War is scaling investments across AI, quantum computing and biotechnology to turn our decades of data into a catalyst for scientific discovery to support the American warfighter.”

The Genesis Mission offers a collaborative pathway for government and industry partners to help the department accelerate technological advances to defend the Homeland, deter adversaries and strengthen the defense industrial base.
