KOTA BELUD, Malaysia — In the jungles and mountains of Sabah, the U.S. Army is showcasing a shift in combat training toward mobile, multinational, and exportable readiness through the Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center.

During Exercise Keris Strike 26, JPMRC deployed advanced resources to validate a key objective: establishing a permanent Regional Combat Training Centre in Malaysia. The trilateral exercise with U.S., Malaysian, and Australian forces is designed to project combat training center doctrine directly into the Indo-Pacific.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Joseph Palilo, a commander within the 196th Infantry Brigade and the task force’s senior leader on the ground, said JPMRC delivers many of the same capabilities found at fixed sites such as the National Training Center in California and the Joint Readiness Training Center in Louisiana. “There are more tools, gizmos and toys at NTC and JRTC, but they don’t really go anywhere,” said Palilo. “We can literally pick this up, find a place on the ground, and execute a [Combat Training Center] for the training audience.”

The exportable package integrates data, instrumentation gear, and self-assessment tools in the field to create realistic, theater-specific training.

A driver for this approach is the Joint Readiness Reserve Initiative, which brings together active-duty, National Guard, and Army Reserve components. At Keris Strike 26, units including the Oklahoma and Guam National Guard and a U.S. Army Reserve Public Affairs Detachment are training alongside international partners to bolster U.S. diplomatic and military influence. “It just strengthens the fact that you need to fight multinationally,” said Palilo. “You just can’t fight alone.”

Beyond strategy, the exercise offers tactical lessons as U.S. Army Soldiers adjust to the methods used by regional partners. Malaysian and Australian units contribute deep jungle warfare experience and force U.S. formations to adapt. “[The Malaysians] just do things differently,” said Palilo. They solve problems differently, and that makes our forces better. It teaches us to think more complex and creatively.”

Organizers frame Keris Strike 26 as a demonstration of land power and integrated deterrence in practice, with JPMRC embedding high-tech training systems in a partner nation to ensure the joint force trains where it operates in the Indo-Pacific.
