Defense Logistics Agency Distribution has unveiled a refreshed blueprint for how the U.S. military moves materiel in war and crisis, warning that the era of uncontested logistics is over and that sustainment itself must be treated as a strategic choice rather than a back-office function.
In a detailed article published in the June 2026 edition of DLA’s Loglines magazine, the organization frames homeland defense as the United States’ top priority under the 2026 National Defense Strategy and argues that the ability to generate, project, and sustain combat power begins with a distribution system designed for pressure, disruption, and distance.
The plan outlines a deliberately tiered global network of specialized nodes—strategic, industrial, forward-positioned, and expeditionary—intended to balance efficiency, responsiveness, and resilience. While each location is optimized for a primary function, DLA emphasizes that every site retains global reach, allowing commanders to source from any node as requirements shift.
At the core are Strategic Distribution Centers in California and Pennsylvania that serve as high-throughput hubs supporting all combatant commands. Their value, the article notes, lies in sheer speed and scale rather than proximity to any one theater. DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, is cited as an example of the infrastructure required to sustain global operations, with facilities designed for high-volume processing and rapid movement of materiel.
Industrial Distribution Centers anchor the maintenance and depot side of readiness. These sites focus on regenerating combat power by supplying repair cycles, overhauls, and long-term equipment sustainment. Although aligned to service depots and the industrial base, they are integrated into the global network and can push materiel beyond their primary lanes to meet operational demand.
