DLA Distribution San Joaquin keeps warfighters fed with unitized group rations

For more than four decades, Defense Logistics Agency Distribution San Joaquin has been a central hub for assembling, packing and shipping meal kits that feed U.S. service members in the field, a mission that began in 1985 and continues to support operations and exercises around the globe.

The program, now known as Unitized Group Rations, traces its roots to Unitized Tray Rations and has evolved in step with changing field-feeding requirements across the military services. The facility plans production to align with operational and training schedules, scaling output as demand rises and falls with deployments and exercises.

In a recent scene from the warehouse, teams worked assembly-line style to build ration kits for shipment, reflecting the highly coordinated logistics effort required to keep units supplied. By consolidating meals into ready-to-issue kits, the operation streamlines distribution and helps commanders sustain forces in austere environments.
