Leadership at Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Yokosuka, Japan, changed hands June 16 as Navy Cmdr. Long Tran assumed command from Navy Cmdr. Daniel Moldonado III during a ceremony onboard Fleet Activities Yokosuka presided over by Army Brig. Gen. Kevin Cotman, commanding general of DLA Distribution.
Moldonado, who took command June 14, 2024, led the distribution center through unplanned surges in material requests and the deployment of the Warehouse Management System. During his tenure, the organization processed more than 520,000 material request orders, over 160,000 receipts and 275 packaging operations.
“DLA Distribution Yokosuka would prove time and again just how critical this facility is. With every new mission, every new adaptation, Daniel, you led this workforce with exceptionalism,” Cotman said. “You created a leadership style for everyone to learn from, and despite the vast scope of your impact, you managed to keep yourself and this team laser focused on the mission.”
Cotman also praised the broader team for sustaining support amid high operational tempo. “Through an evolving world-wide landscape and an increased operational tempo, this workforce has consistently delivered, with professionalism, the very support our warfighters need,” Cotman said. “It is through your efforts that Japan, the United States and the entire region are kept safe.”
Tran arrives with a portfolio of operational and shore assignments. At sea, he served as assistant supply officer aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Hopper; supply officer aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf; and assistant supply officer, principal assistant for logistics and principal assistant for services aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. He is a qualified naval aviation supply officer, surface warfare supply corps officer and a member of the Defense Acquisition Corps.
His shore duty includes time as a contract specialist with DLA Troop Support in Philadelphia; director of regional services for Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Yokosuka; and supply corps career counselor and lieutenant commander detailer at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee. Before taking command in Yokosuka, he served as the assistant to the director of the Supply Corps Office of Personnel at Navy Personnel Command.
