SAN DIEGO — An F-35B fighter jet assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11 was involved in a mishap on the flightline at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar around 10 a.m. local time Friday, according to the Marine Corps.
The pilot ejected and was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition for evaluation and treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, officials said.
Emergency personnel responded at the scene. Authorities did not immediately release details about the nature of the incident, the extent of any damage, or whether anyone else was injured. Additional information is expected as it becomes available.
MCAS Miramar, home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, is a major aviation hub in San Diego. The F-35B is the Marine Corps’ short takeoff/vertical landing variant of the Joint Strike Fighter, designed to operate from amphibious assault ships and austere airfields.
