Vice Adm. Yvette Davids led a U.S. Navy delegation in high-level talks with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force aimed at tightening coordination, aligning priorities, and expanding day-to-day cooperation between the two navies, the Navy said in a news release.

Davids, the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Intelligence, Operations, Strategy, and Force Development, met with senior JMSDF leaders for a bilateral dialogue focused on shared maritime challenges and ways to accelerate combined planning, training, and operations. “The U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force have a deep and enduring partnership built on trust, shared values, and repeated operations together,” said Vice Adm. Davids. “Strategic dialogues like this help us turn alignment into action — improving how we plan, train, operate, and adapt together.”

The engagement builds on the U.S. Navy–JMSDF Strategic Approach Plan signed in 2020 and continues a standing series of senior staff talks that the two sides use to track progress, identify new avenues for cooperation, and set near-term objectives. The Navy framed the discussions as part of a broader effort to bolster readiness and deterrence alongside a close ally. “This work is about readiness and deterrence,” Davids said. “Our ability to learn together, solve problems together, and move faster together is a warfighting advantage. The strength of this relationship directly supports the Navy’s ability to compete, deter, and, if necessary, fight alongside one of our closest allies.”

Washington and Tokyo routinely describe their security partnership as central to keeping the region stable and open to lawful maritime activity. The two navies regularly operate together at sea and participate in combined exercises, exchanges, and port visits across the Indo-Pacific. According to the Navy, the latest dialogue is intended to translate that operational familiarity into faster decision-making, more integrated training, and improved interoperability for real-world missions.

No specific new initiatives were announced in the release, but officials said the U.S. Navy and JMSDF will continue to pursue joint activities, regular engagements, and operational cooperation to advance shared priorities in the months ahead.
