Nearly 400 warfighters from Peru, the United States, Chile, and Argentina began joint training on Sept. 7 in Sauce, Peru, launching Exercise Southern Vanguard 2026 in the Amazon Jungle. The effort is designed to sharpen combined staff operations, fires planning, and maneuver coordination through the Military Decision-Making Process, establish a Peruvian-led combined task force, and close interoperability gaps across human, procedural, and technical domains.
Multinational teams trained over six days under Peruvian Jungle instructors at the Jungle School (Escuela de Selva). The program covered jungle swimming techniques, waterborne operations, survival skills, and jungle movement tactics.
In the coming days, soldiers will shift to a three-day field training exercise that will put each multinational group through a series of challenges while navigating the Amazon’s difficult terrain. The event is intended to test individual grit, determination, and resiliency, while strengthening interoperability among the participating nations.
