Air University is sharpening the U.S. military’s approach to space power as rapid technological change and a surge in commercial activity reshape the domain that underpins navigation, communications, missile warning and intelligence for modern forces.
The institution, which integrates education, research, doctrine development and operational engagement across multiple schools and centers, is emphasizing space as a proving ground for new ideas on deterrence, risk and future conflict. Few areas better capture the speed and complexity of change, university leaders say, than the space arena now drawing more competitors and private-sector players.
“The space domain is not a new domain, as my Space Force students like to remind everybody,” said Wendy N. Whitman Cobb, professor of strategy and security studies and deputy commandant of the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies (SAASS). “But studying it is.”
Within Air University, SAASS has become a focal point for examining deterrence, strategic competition and the implications of commercial space capabilities for military operations. Faculty and students explore how emerging technologies and business models alter force design, resilience and escalation dynamics in orbit—and how those shifts reverberate across the Department of the Air Force and the Joint Force.
“We’re on the cutting edge of what it means to think about space power, teach it and understand it,” Whitman Cobb said. “It’s an evolving field. There are still a lot of unanswered questions, and our students are going to be the ones who help answer them.”
Those inquiries extend beyond the seminar room. Air University connects academic study with operational challenges through research, publications and collaboration across the force, aiming to inform decision-making and frame hard questions for planners and commanders. SAASS’s Space Power course tasks students with current problem sets and collaborative projects; over the last two years, students have also produced publicly available episodes of the “Space Power Discussions” podcast to spur broader professional learning.
“The commercial space industry changes our strategic calculations of what we can and can’t do in space,” Whitman Cobb said.
Air University officials point to tangible feedback loops: graduates returning to units better prepared for complex missions, research that helps define emerging problems, and ideas feeding discussions across the Department of the Air Force, the Joint Staff and Combatant Commands. The university’s structure—bringing together researchers, educators, doctrine developers and operational practitioners—encourages multiple perspectives on the same challenge and accelerates the move from insight to implementation.
“I think the biggest thing we can do is send back to the Joint Force the educated people that will be in place to solve these really hard operational problems,” Whitman Cobb said.
With commercial launches multiplying, new technologies maturing and more nations and companies entering orbit, the university is signaling that the need for adaptable, critically thinking leaders will only grow. “Space is baked into everything we do,” Whitman Cobb said. “We’re going to see more countries, more companies, more people being involved in the space domain than ever before.”
Air University leaders say they are aligning coursework, research and operational engagement to keep pace, with the goal of preparing Airmen, Guardians and joint warfighters for decisions in environments where the right answer is not obvious and the consequences are high.
