The Space Force has selected 247 Air Force Reservists in space-related career fields to transfer into part-time roles, marking a key step in implementing the Space Force Personnel Management Act. The measure is designed to create a unified service that brings together currently serving Guardians and Air Force Reservists in space-focused specialties, with options for both full- and part-time service.
“The integration of these talented Air Force Reservists is an important step in the evolution of our service,” said Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman. “They bring a wealth of experience and expertise to our force, and we’re excited to welcome them as Guardians.”
Part-time Guardians will serve as Guardians on Non-Sustained Duty, or GNSD, embedded across the service’s day-to-day institutional and warfighting-enabling missions. Participation requirements for GNSDs will be the equivalent of at least 36 days a year—48 IDT periods and 12 AT days—to count as a “good year” toward retirement.
Reservists who accept their GNSD assignments are slated to begin transferring this summer. The Space Force Transfer page lists those selected, and individuals may decline a part-time transfer up until they receive official orders.
