U.S. announces military support for Venezuela earthquake relief

U.S. Southern Command said it is working with the Department of State to support U.S. government relief operations in Venezuela following yesterday’s earthquakes. The command said it is acting under direction from the Department of War as joint forces mobilize to assist.

According to the command, forces are moving quickly to deliver airlift, logistics, and lifesaving capabilities to help save lives and support the Government of Venezuela during the crisis.

An operational planning team has been established that includes experienced subject matter experts from the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. Those advisers are supporting staff and leadership on disaster relief planning and mission-related decisions.

The command said it has also begun close coordination with partners and allies in the region who have pledged to join the international assistance underway to aid people in Venezuela.
