The Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship USS Warrior (MCM 10) completed a Ship Repair and Maintenance Exercise (SRMX) on Sept. 30, 2026, during a scheduled port visit to Hakodate, Japan.
During the bilateral maintenance period, Sailors worked alongside local and visiting Japanese ship repair professionals at Hakodate port facilities to rapidly address planned maintenance items, testing the ability of forward-deployed forces to return ships to operational readiness.
In parallel with physical repairs, the crew conducted a battle damage assessment and repair tabletop exercise with a fly-in team of specialists from Naval Sea Systems Command, reinforcing engineering assessment processes and repair decision-making for battle damage scenarios.
“We are grateful for the hospitality that the people and city of Hakodate have shown the Warrior’s crew,” said U.S. Navy Capt. Scott Wells, commanding officer of Commander, Task Force (CTF) 77. “This successful SRMX was key to enhancing the crew’s readiness in the event of actual battle damage, and I would like to thank the training crew from NAVSEA and our Japanese counterparts in the ship repair facility for joining us for this SRMX.”
SRMX is an overarching U.S. Pacific Fleet effort to sustain ships forward and return them quickly to operations. By exercising this capability in peacetime with allies and partners, the Navy and regional counterparts aim to ensure infrastructure, logistics pathways, and technical proficiencies are in place for potential crises or conflict.
The Hakodate iteration is the second SRMX completed in Japan, following the inaugural event in Maizuru with the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62). Other iterations have been conducted in Australia, the Republic of the Philippines, and Singapore.
Commander, Task Force 77 directs mine countermeasure assets to clear sea mines and ensure the free flow of commerce and freedom of movement for U.S., allied, and partner nation vessels in peacetime and in conflict. U.S. 7th Fleet, the Navy’s largest forward-deployed numbered fleet, routinely operates with allies and partners to help preserve a free and open Indo-Pacific.
