The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Iraq for Bell 412EPX helicopters and associated equipment and support, with an estimated value of $150 million, according to a U.S. government notice labeled Transmittal 25-83.
The package includes Very High Frequency radios, spare parts, ground support equipment, publications and technical data, training for pilots and maintainers, and U.S. government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support, along with other program assistance.
U.S. officials said the sale would advance American foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening a strategic partner’s ability to maintain internal security and respond to threats. The aircraft are intended to provide airlift for troops, medical evacuation and logistics, capabilities that would bolster Iraq’s Counter-Terrorism Service operations.
The State Department noted that Iraq is expected to absorb the aircraft and services without difficulty and said the sale would not alter the basic military balance in the region.
Bell-Textron of Fort Worth, Texas, is the principal contractor.
As with all Foreign Military Sales, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of the proposed deal. Congressional review is required, and the approval does not constitute a finalized contract; quantities, scope and value can change during negotiations.
