U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM) and the Angolan Armed Forces commenced the 2026 African Chiefs of Defense Conference (ACHOD) on June 30, 2026, in Luanda, Angola. The three-day event is focused on crucial discussions regarding securing the global commons, the importance of operating in the information domain, and the role of innovation and economic development in fostering stability across the continent.

Gen. (Ret.) João Ernesto dos Santos, Minister of State and Head of the Military Affairs Cabinet for the Office of the President of Angola, emphasized the significance of the conference, noting, “Angola is very proud to co-organize and host the African Chiefs of Defence Conference, a privileged forum for dialogue on security, stability and prosperity.” He highlighted the necessity of regional and international partnerships for maintaining territorial integrity and security, stating, “History has taught us that peace is not a permanent privilege, but one that requires sacrifice, commitment and cooperation.”

During the conference, senior military leaders are expected to participate in bilateral meetings, collaborative working sessions, and panel discussions aimed at enhancing regional cooperation to tackle transnational threats. U.S. Air Force Gen. Dagvin Anderson, AFRICOM commander, pointed out that threats from organizations such as violent extremists and drug cartels are borderless, necessitating coordinated efforts to address these challenges. He remarked, “That’s why it’s so important to have conferences like this… where we can come together to discuss these issues, to discuss the opportunities, to make connections, so we can move forward together.”

This year’s agenda includes distinguished speakers, such as a virtual address from U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Christopher J. Mahoney, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, along with Dr. Carlos Da Silva Feijo, a former minister of state for Angola. Expert panels will delve into topics like security in the global commons, countering disinformation, the relationship between economics and security, and the innovative use of technologies like drones in military operations.

The ACHOD is recognized as a vital platform for military officials to confront common security threats, strengthen regional stability, and design collaborative frameworks that facilitate long-term investment and economic growth throughout Africa. The conference is scheduled to run until July 2, 2026.
