The 2026 African Chiefs of Defense Conference (ACHOD) took place in Angola, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among military, civilian, and industry sectors. The conference was themed “Leveraging our strengths – advancing regional security for enduring prosperity,” and participants engaged in discussions addressing several key aspects of security across the continent, including cross-border security, commercial innovation, and information management.

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Eero R. Keravuori highlighted the distinctiveness of the U.S. partnership model, which aims to enhance the capabilities of partner nations while upholding their sovereignty. He noted the readiness of participating African nations to work collaboratively against common threats. Military leaders, government officials, industry representatives, and security experts from both the United States and Africa convened to reinforce U.S. Africa Command’s commitment to a holistic and transparent partnership model.

The conference included four focused panels designed to tackle the complex challenges and opportunities faced by the continent. These panels covered topics such as:

– Global Commons – Crossing the Seams: Tackling cross-border security and shared maritime and airspace domains.
– Information Domain – Owning the Story: Addressing misinformation and fostering transparent communication networks.
– Economic Opportunity – Linking Stability and Prosperity: Exploring the connection between defense economics, direct investment, and long-term stability.
– Innovating Solutions – Beyond Technology in Operations: Focusing on the integration of commercial innovation and non-traditional alliances.

The presence of senior U.S. Department of War officials, including Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff leadership, underscored the significance of the discussions held at the conference. Their virtual remarks reaffirmed the Pentagon’s commitment to collaborating with African partners to address shared security challenges.

New to this year’s agenda was an industry roundtable aimed at soliciting direct feedback from private industry on the challenges faced while operating in Africa. This initiative sought to foster professional exchanges between senior commercial leaders and identify potential solutions to the complex issues affecting business operations on the continent.

Discussions in Luanda confirmed the potential of shared capabilities and economic initiatives to enhance security operations. Angolan Aviation General Altino dos Santos expressed appreciation for the commitment shown at the event, emphasizing that it opened vital channels for discussing pressing security issues and supporting economic prosperity.

U.S. Africa Command, responsible for operations across 53 African states, aims to counter transnational threats, strengthen security forces, and respond to crises, highlighting its integral role in fostering stability and prosperity across the continent.
