U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced a significant strategic partnership with the United Arab Emirates on July 28, paving the way for the formation of the first bilateral task force dedicated to advancing military artificial intelligence applications.
Named Task Force Talon Synapse, this initiative is set to officially commence in the coming weeks. The task force will be based in Abu Dhabi and is expected to comprise around 20 personnel from both the U.S. and the UAE, specializing in AI, data, and cybersecurity.
Adm. Brad Cooper, the CENTCOM commander, emphasized the historic significance of this collaboration. “This will be a historic milestone as we work with one of our most capable regional partners to rapidly deliver evolving AI advancements to our warfighters,” he stated. He highlighted the shared commitment of both nations to embrace AI technologies that drive innovation with speed and efficiency.
The inception of Task Force Talon Synapse follows discussions between Cooper and UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan last year concerning the potential formation of such a task force. Recent engagements included meetings with AI industry leaders and Emirati defense officials during a previous visit to the region.
The primary focus of this task force will be on integrating AI solutions for intelligence support, safeguarding critical infrastructure, and enhancing monitoring capabilities of the regional security landscape.
