Department of War launches OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil on GenAI.mil

The Department of War today launched OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil on GenAI.mil, describing it as a new frontier AI capability within the department’s premier generative AI platform. The rollout marks the adoption phase of an enterprise partnership established with OpenAI in 2025 and comes with accreditation for Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5, positioning the system for secure, consistent enterprise use.

Built to mirror a familiar commercial experience inside a secure environment, ChatGPT Mil is tailored to warfighter needs and centers on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs, with additional features planned over time. The department says the system is designed to support document-heavy unclassified work across planning, policy, logistics, and administration, and is built to scale for more than 3 million personnel.

Officials describe the deployment as a way to accelerate routine tasks and free up time for higher-priority projects across the Joint Force. Integrated into GenAI.mil alongside existing frontier AI capabilities, the addition is intended to create a more robust, multi-model ecosystem for warfighters.

The Chief Digital and AI Office and the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering will continue scaling frontier AI as a force multiplier across the Joint Force, the department said. The launch is framed as supporting the White House’s AI Action Plan and reinforcing a commitment to lead AI adoption for warfighter mission sets and decision superiority.
