New senior enlisted advisor joins DLA Distribution Susquehanna

Army 1st Sgt. Laquita Bryant has taken over as senior enlisted advisor at Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, succeeding Army 1st Sgt. Rayon Cunningham in an Aug. 3 change of responsibility ceremony at the Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna.

The handover, hosted by Army Col. Christopher Urynowicz, commander of DLA Distribution Susquehanna, marked a leadership transition while paying tribute to Cunningham’s career as he approaches retirement. “I’m grateful for the support and guidance 1st Sgt. Cunningham provided to me during my short time in command,” Urynowicz said. “And I’m confident that 1st Sgt. Bryant will continue with his legacy of excellence.”

First sergeants serve as senior noncommissioned officers and principal enlisted advisors, responsible for the health, welfare, morale, training and discipline of soldiers. Working alongside the commander, they shoulder significant administrative and personnel duties so commanders can concentrate on operations and tactics.

Cunningham, nearing retirement after 26 years in uniform, reflected on his tenure at Susquehanna and the principles that have guided him. “Leadership is not about authorities. Leadership is about serving others, building trust, developing people and leaving an organization better than you found it,” he said.

He also called out the civilian and military teams that power the distribution center’s global reach. “Every item you receive, inspect, repair, package, store, ship has a potential to save a soldier, sailor, airman, marine, guardian or coast guardsman,” Cunningham said. “They may never know your name, but they benefit from your professionalism every single day. Success is not measured by rank, title, award or position. Success is measured by the lives we touch, the people we develop and the legacy we leave behind.”

Bryant, a veteran noncommissioned officer now stepping into the senior enlisted advisor position, thanked the commander for the opportunity and pledged a collaborative approach with the workforce. “Colonel Urynowicz, thank you for your confidence and for entrusting me with this responsibility,” she said. “It’s truly an honor to join this family.”

Acknowledging the large civilian contingent that keeps DLA Distribution Susquehanna operating alongside its soldiers and other service members, Bryant emphasized listening and trust-building as she assumes the post. “I look forward to learning from you and earning your trust,” she told employees, adding her appreciation to her predecessor: “I want to thank 1st Sgt. Cunningham for his leadership and for the foundation he built.”
