Employees from Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support’s Medical and Subsistence supply chains swapped office routines for bats and gloves on June 10, taking the field for a morale-boosting softball game designed to strengthen connections across teams.

The outing is part of a broader workforce initiative to build community at work, echoing guidance from the U.S. Surgeon General’s workplace mental health framework, which highlights the role of relationships and belonging in overall well-being and job satisfaction.

“This friendly competition was organized as part of ongoing efforts to promote employee morale and foster positive workforce culture,” said Alyssa Greco, project integrator. “The Cultural Improvement Teams and Employee Morale Teams from both supply chains worked together to plan this event.”

“Team building is so important,” said Susan Gallager, lead commodity support liaison. “When we come together in a collective way and execute these popular events, we’re building upon the partnerships, trust, and communication that enhance collaboration across supply chains and contribute to mission success.”

With Medical in red and Subsistence in green, the game offered a welcome pause from daily responsibilities. Colleagues cheered each other from the first pitch to the final out, with the emphasis squarely on camaraderie rather than the scoreboard.

“These bonding opportunities help create positive work environments and impact mental health,” said Greco. “They also remind us that strong teams are built not only through mission accomplishment, but also through meaningful personal connections.”

“These events give us a chance to know each other better and realize we really are a part of the same team,” said Greco. “We look forward to more events like this one.”

Participants left with a renewed sense of connection, underscoring that the most important results can be measured in the relationships that carry teams forward long after the game ends.
