U.S. approves military sale to Kuwait for KC-130J aircraft follow-on sustainment support

The United States plans to provide follow-on sustainment support for Kuwait’s KC-130J aircraft, according to a press release titled “Kuwait – KC-130J Aircraft Follow-on Sustainment Support.” The notice signals continued U.S.-Kuwait defense cooperation focused on keeping the Gulf state’s tactical airlift and aerial refueling fleet mission-ready.

While the announcement did not detail scope or value, follow-on sustainment programs typically cover spare parts, consumables, depot- and organizational-level maintenance, software and avionics updates, technical publications, and contractor logistics support. They can also include training, engineering assistance, and program management to ensure aircraft availability and safety over the long term.

Kuwait operates a small fleet of KC-130J Super Hercules tankers, a versatile variant capable of aerial refueling, cargo and troop transport, and medical evacuation. The aircraft are a cornerstone of the Kuwait Air Force’s mobility mission, supporting both national defense tasks and regional humanitarian operations.

Sustainment support is considered critical for aging and high-tempo fleets, helping prevent readiness gaps and extending aircraft service life. For the KC-130J, that can encompass work on airframes, mission systems, and propulsion, as well as calibration and support equipment required to keep the aircraft flying.

The announcement aligns with ongoing U.S. efforts to bolster the capabilities of Gulf partners through training, maintenance, and interoperability initiatives. Kuwait, a longstanding non-NATO ally, routinely participates in joint exercises with U.S. forces and relies on American systems across its air inventory.
